Cell Description:                 Human cervix carcinoma

 

Culture medium:                      EMEM (RBSS) with sodium bicarbonate + 1% NEAA,  or DMEM; 2 mM L-glutamine, 1 mM sodium pyruvate, + 10% FBS

Subculture routine:                 Split subconfluent cultures 1:3 to 1:10 i.e. seeding at 1x104 to

3x104 cells/cm2  using 0,25% trypsin or trypsin/EDTA; 5% CO2

Description:                            The cells are positive for keratin by immunoperoxidase staining. HeLa cells have been reported to contain human papilloma virus 18 (HPV-18) sequences. P53 expression was reported to be low, and normal levels of pRB (retinoblastoma suppressor) were found.

Comments:                              The 1st aneuploid, epithelial-like line derived from human tissue and maintained by serial subculture. Identified as a contaminant in many subsequently derived lines, due to poor culture techniques. Susceptible to poliovirus 1 and adenovirus type 3. Derived from a 31 years old black female.
